Hello, Dear Ones, from the Outer Banks of North Carolina!

Today is the first day of our family vacation. Over the years, the seashore has been one of my favorite places to meet with God. The ocean seems like such an appropriate metaphor for all that He is: Breathtakingly beautiful, yet amazingly powerful; sustaining so much life and so full of mystery…

We arrived around dinner time last night, road weary and too tired to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings (of course, Teddy and Jeffy had no problem, but their Daddy and I just watched from afar). But, despite the fatigue, and as always, that first glimpse of the ocean had me mesmerized. So I told the Lord before going to sleep last night to wake me up early so I could spend some time with Him. Ever faithful, He gently opened my sleepy eyes around 6am. Just in time to catch the sunrise and watch her red glow crest higher and higher into the sky. My morning walk would have been so peaceful if it were not for one thing…er, well, two things, really. Two small people, that is, who were walking in my shadow and invading my pious thoughts with raucous laughter and making frequent deposits of shell fragments in my pockets. Before 7am, both of my boys were completely covered in God’s ocean…and a healthy dose of His sand, as well. It was quite different from my morning devotions of the past. And I loved it! I told the boys how I love to talk out loud to God at the beach; that my words seem lost in the pounding of the surf, yet, I know that He hears me so clearly. They were respectful, yet uninterested in taking up their own prayers. I was able to talk to God about the joy they have brought into my life. And I sang Him a song, my weak voice made beautiful by the accompaniment of the wind and the waves. All in all, it was a lovely first morning at the beach, despite the, er, distractions. Besides, we have plenty other mornings left. The boys will surely sleep in tomorrow…
