One Thousand Gifts: The Great Beauty Hunt

I am sitting on the couch, ignoring the coming of night when through the glass of the back doors there blinks a beckoning. It’s a firefly and she is hovering just outside the perimeter of my neat—right outside of my tidy world.
There is a whole world out there.
“…the Hebrew word used throughout scripture to describe God’s glory, kathod, is derived from the root word meaning ‘heaviness’…Dusk and all the arching dome and the field and the great-bellied moon, it all heaves, heavy with the glory. I heave to breathe: The whole earth is full of His glory. Sky, land, and sea, heavy and saturated with God—why do I always forget? (Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts)
This time I listen. I follow the blinking light out the door. And the meadow is a living fire, saturated with His glory. The bow of the moon leans lazy in its inky bed and I lean lazy on the rail and melt into the moist air that presses up against my skin.
Could I run after the moon?
Ann’s story about her great moon chase stirred because haven’t I too gazed long at that silver veneer? She has posed for me, boldly baring pocked face—always basking in the light of sister-sun. Tonight, she hides most of herself behind the earth’s shadow and I think I see my silhouette etched into her brow.
I see the moon and the moon sees me
Tonight she is expectant mother—all bowed back and hopeful midriff; expectant. She births beauty.
“…Beauty is all that is glory and God is Beauty embodied, glory manifested. This is what I crave: I hunger for Beauty. Is that why I must keep up the hunt? When I cease the beauty hunt, is that why I begin to starve, waste away?” (Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts)
It is beauty that Ann births when she gives us her moon-chase story. Beauty that lifts and pulls us close…into the Father’s arms.
“Joy that fills me under full moon is the joy that always fills God. What I’ve run to brush up against, to press all my throbbing emptiness into, these heavy glory waters endlessly flood from Him and He spills. Skirts of stars swirl through black space and waterfalls canter over stones, manes of runaway horses, and lone mushroom tilts in the shadows of soundless forest and God sees it all. This is His endless experience because this is who He is, beauty overflowing…” (Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts)
One tiny firefly. The winking light brought me here—under these stars hung by His hand, under this faithful witness in the sky, watching this meadow burn with a million flickering flames.
Beauty. It leaves the bread crumb trail to Him.

This is the sixth in a series on Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right WhereYou Are.  Join me this time next week for a reflection on Chapter seven.

There is beauty ….God’s idea of beauty in places we don’t take long enough to embrace. I am loving the thoughts that are swirling around my head now…the meditations on His view of my world.
How wondrous to run with abandon to reach for the moon. “Take time, notice…I am everywhere”

Thank you for these reminders. I will bask in the lines of that book again and again. Beauty, naked and unashamed. How is it we ever forget?

Much love to you, Laura, Beauty Hunter. xo

“I see the moon and the moon sees me. . .”
My Nana always sang that to me when I was a little girl. Made me smile to read it here, where I find much beauty.

Beautifully written-how often I miss the beauty that is God. So glad you followed the flickering light outside to see His beauty that shines even at night.
