An Artist’s Prayer…

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful
And enkindle them with the fire of thy love;
Send forth they spirit, and they shall be created,
And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
–from the Catholic Missal and the Book of Common Prayer and discovered by me in this book.
Recognizing that our own creative production mimics divine creation as set forth in both the Old and New Testaments may help us become aware of the connection between our artistic talents and God, the Great Artist. (Janice Elsheimer, The Creative Call).

This week I’m writing my own prayer to the Holy Spirit using the prayer above as a guide. Whenever I sit down with my art, my plan is to start with this tiny reminder that the Spirit lives in me and–when invited–might breathe new life into my work. Writing my own prayer gives a sense of intimacy–of joining in a deep bond to co-create with my Creator.

Won’t you try? If you choose to write you own Artist’s Prayer, will you let me know? Come back here and tell me and then share at your place? It would make me so happy…

Laura, I don’t have an ‘artist’s prayer’….I’m just always confident that the Holy Spirit who lives in me and moves like a river through me (if I let Him) is always speaking. And dropping in gifts of creativity.

When I release the gifts that come from Him, it usually makes a connection with people that glorifies Jesus–the work of the Holy Spirit.

When I’m in my flesh, well, my Jody ideas just fall flat….

Your words spoke pure comfort to me today. I’ve been a little dry lately and in need of a pouring in. Thank you sweet Laura. {I might need to read the book!} Blessings for your weekend…

I love the idea of using whatever gifts God has given for His glory! I’m no artsit – not by a long shot! Can’t draw a straight line with a ruler. But I know sometimes I’m drawn to the piano to play for Him. Hugs to you!

That prayer is new to me. Thank you for sharing it. Others’ prayer words help me grow.

I did write such a prayer some years ago. It was originally just for my own use, but this blog post now includes it:

Amy Carmichael wrote a prayer poem about her own words; that’s probably where I got the idea. When I’m able to locate it, I can send it to you.

Grace to you in Jesus, lovely friend.

Love that prayer. And the Holy Spirit is the Only One Who can give us peace on an everyday life. Must rely on Him as He is a major part of my whole life.

My artistry is connected to poetry, lyrics, stories… I “see” drawings, etc., in my mind and heart. Can’t do them. Oh, well… maybe when I get to heaven that will be one of my blessings….ooh, ooh, ooh.
