31-ish Days of Prayer: A Blessing for Pets

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

Oct. 4 is the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi, who loved all creatures. Many churches have special services for blessing of pets on or around this day in the fall. Lucy Mae has been a special blessing to us and so we try to bless her when we can. You might enjoy reading St. Francis’ The Canticle of the Creatures.

Our church does this every year. I always get a little nervous with dogs and cats there but it does make it exciting and gives us a renewed appreciation of worship. This year the pastor asked if I would hold his large cat. mmm, will be interesting.

You must be a trusted friend to be given such an honor, Jean! Our church has never done a pet blessing, but St. Tim’s up the street always does. They do it at the park in a separate worship service, though. Maybe a change of venue would make you less nervous?
